For many, the first year at university signals the first time you will be living on your own in your new student accommodation.  This can be a time of massive change and transformation, which can be a scary prospect. With only a few months left till term begins in September, here a few essential things to prepare this summer.

Decide What You Actually Need To Bring With You

Nobody likes packing, and it’s even worse when you have to pack up most of all your belongings to move them across the country. It’s important to make sure you only take what is essential and not just try and fill up your parent’s car with everything you could possibly need. Space will be at a premium while moving stuff to uni and it’s best just to take what you need. It is also important to remember that you can always buy anything you forget once you are settled into your new student housing. Study Inn’s rooms come equipped with a range of living essentials so you won’t have to worry too much about what you bring, making the whole experience a lot less stressful.

Plan Your Finances

One of the struggles of living as a student can be receiving your student maintenance loan at the start of term and making it stretch out for 3 months and not spend it all on fresher’s week. To avoid this, however laborious it may seem, actually planning and writing out a set budget will help immeasurably. Estimating reoccurring costs like food and transport costs can make it easier to understand how much you can actually spend on more fun activities. Getting a good student bank account is also important, making sure you get the best possible deal on overdraft charges.

Research Your City

Although you will come to know your newly adopted city like you’ve lived there all your life, it’s great to do some research and learn what your town has to offer outside of university. Looking for the best nightclubs, restaurants, places of interests and shopping areas is easy using the internet, with hundreds of resources just a click away. Here at Study Inn, we even have our own guides of everything to do as a student in Nottingham.

Look For Student Jobs

A part time job during your studies can be a great way to earn extra money, making that student loan last a bit longer, and looks great on you CV! Although, it might be best not to commit to anything until you have your timetable, as most courses vary wildly in contact hours and you may find yourself with no free time at all!

Get Some Good Recipes

If you haven’t learnt how to cook yet, you will have to learn quickly at university! Practice cooking some simple, cheap recipes over the summer as there is only so long you can survive on takeaways and ready meals. There are hundreds of great resources online that list the best student recipes that don’t require a thousand different ingredients and won’t stretch your budget.

Connect With Your Fellow Students on Social Media

Make sure you don’t miss out on anything in the first week of university by getting involved in your Universities social media feeds. Not only will this have all the updates on fresher’s, enrolment and welcome events, there will also be loads of other fellow students who will be in the same situation as you!
