A students guide to the city of Sheffield


Are you planning on heading off to Sheffield for your university studies?

Sheffield is a beautiful city of heritage with much to see and do, but if you aren’t familiar with the city you might find yourself lost for ideas. That’s why we have put together this student city guide; giving you a whole range of ideas on things to see and do throughout your stay in Sheffield.

Things To Do In Sheffield

Sheffield is a diverse city with an exciting range of things to see and do. Whether it’s going for an outdoor walk through one of Sheffield’s scenic parks, or taking a stroll around one of the local museums, you’ll never find yourself short of ideas again.

Museums, Theatres & Galleries

Sheffield has a rich selection of museums, theatres and galleries dotted about the city; giving you plenty of opportunity for fun things to do locally to your student accommodation.

Sheffield is home to the biggest theatre complex outside of London, consisting of three famous theatres; the Crucible theatre, the Crucible studio and the Lyceum theatre, as well as other smaller theatres to enjoy - hosting everything from cutting edge dramas to musicals and everything in between. 

If you’re into art you’re in luck as Sheffield is home to an array of Galleries. The two most famous galleries in Sheffield are the Graves gallery and the Millennium gallery, showcasing some beautiful works from artist around the world. The Site Gallery is Sheffield’s flagship contemporary art gallery, which always has some interesting displays and is definitely worth a visit!

With a rich industrial heritage comes a vast array of museums and heritage sites for you to explore. Whether you’re looking to find out about the industrial past of this wonderful city or you want to see some of the historical landmarks Sheffield has to offer, you’ll find a little bit of everything in Sheffield. We recommend checking out Kelham island museum, the Metalwork collection, Sheffield cathedral and Sheffield’s best kept secret – the 500 year old bishop’s house.

Sports Facilities

Sports facilities don’t run scarce in the city of Sheffield. Whether you’d prefer to watch or take part, you shouldn’t have a problem with the range of centres around the city.  

Sheffield is home to the English Institute of sport; a huge venue offering sports facilities for everything from Judo to Netball, athletics to snooker and more. If you’re looking to take part in some sports, this is a must visit venue!

Sheffield is also home to Ponds forge - a wonderful swimming bath facility, and a number of different football stadiums; Sheffield United FC & Sheffield Wednesday FC, meaning football fans are only a short walk away from seeing their favourite games!


Sheffield is home to a variety of different music venues and events, with a list that’s way too long to cover! If you’re a music lover we recommend checking out one of the city’s famous venues; the FlyDSA arena and the O2 arena.  

Sheffield also has a number of independent music venues dotted around the city that provide cheap gigs and entertaining nights out regularly!

The Outdoors

There are a lot of things to see and do outdoors in Sheffield too. The local area has a lot of ancient woodland, parks and scenic areas to relax and take a stroll, and the city’s urban streets are home to some wonderful professional street art; making for some interesting walks around the local area!

Places To Eat & Drink

Sheffield isn’t short on places to eat & drink with restaurants, bars, pubs and coffee shops to be found on almost every street.


Sheffield is home to many restaurants, with a diverse selection serving up the many flavours of the world right on your doorstep. Whether you’re heading for a romantic meal for two or you’re popping out with friends on a culinary adventure, you shouldn’t have trouble choosing a restaurant with Sheffield’s range of Mediterranean, Asian, Italian, and other cuisine’s.


The city of Sheffield has no shortage of pubs, providing wonderful affordable food and opportunity for many great nights out with friends. Sheffield’s student accommodation centre is situated in the heart of the city, with many pubs to choose from only a short walk from your doorstep! We recommend checking out the Devonshire Cat & The Benjamin Huntsman; both absolutely wonderful traditional pubs.

Coffee Shops & Café’s

Coffee shops and cafes are great to pop into to relax and kill some time. You’ll find coffee shops and café’s all around Sheffield, there are a few that we recommend checking out; the Steam Yard – a relaxed Indy coffee shop, and Caffe Massarella – a stylish, unique 5-star Italian luxury café.

Places To Shop

As the bustling busy city that Sheffield is there’s plenty of opportunity to shop, both in the heart of the city and beyond.

Fargate – City Centre

The Fargate shopping centre is situated in the heart of Sheffield city centre. This popular pedestrian shopping area is home to a multitude of high street stores with an emphasis on fashion. With stores ranging from game shops, to clothing stores, make up boutiques and more, there’s something for everyone at Fargate.

Fargate also holds Continental markets 4 times annually, as well as other special events to look out for.

 The Moor Shopping Centre

The moor is home to Study Inn’s Sheffield student accommodation centre as well as a huge selection of stores. The Moor shopping centre holds a variety of high street shops, eateries & a cinema, and sits right on the doorstep of Study Inn residents. Whether you’re looking to shop ‘til you drop, or pop into a local eatery for a bite to eat, the Moor has you covered. Meadowhall is a huge shopping mall, home to a wide array of stores ranging from designer outlets to high street fashion stores, card shops and confectionaries and much more.  

Shopping isn’t the only thing to do at the Meadowhall mall however. Complimenting it’s variety of stores is a number of different restaurants, cafés and eateries to indulge upon during your visit. The Meadowhall cinema offers further enjoyment from your visit if you fancy giving it a visit.
